Jaundice occurs in almost 60% of the new-borns and in approximately 20% of these neonates, the condition is severe and requires treatment. Severe jaundice, when left untreated or ineffectively treated, can lead to severe brain damage, a condition called kernicterus or death. This can be averted simply by reducing the serum bilirubin through phototherapy.
